thinking of Paula August 12, 2006 21:35
Elsabe    Haines Junction, Yukon
I was a co-worker, neighbour and friend of Paula's for several years in Banff. She was a really special person to me, a real bright light. She had that unique spark of life that drew so many of us to her. I so respected and enjoyed her unquenchably positive outlook in the face of many painful challenges throughout the years I knew her.

I still frequently think of her, even though I now live far away in the north. Her spirit continues to live on in beautiful and unexpected ways. This weekend she was on my mind, and I thought of these lyrics, to a song about Northern Ontario that we listened to frequently while working together:
"Firewood, smoke and oranges, path of old canoe;
I would course the inland ocean to be back to you;
No matter where I go to, it's always home again;
To the rugged northern shore, and the days of sun and wind;
And the land of the silver birch, cry of the loon;
There's something 'bout this country, that's a part of me and you."
[Ian Tamblyn] from 'Woodsmoke and Oranges'.

Paula also enjoyed the music of David Carter and Tracy Grammer, particularly a song called 'The Mountain'. David himself predeceased Paula by two years, and the lyrics to his song 'When I Go' give me comfort when I'm missing her. I hope they'll do the same for Paula's family and many friends:

" . . . . Sigh, mournful sister, whisper and turn,
I will rattle like dry leaves when I go;
Stand in the mist where my fire used to burn,
I will camp on the night breeze when I go;
And should you glimpse my wandering form out on the borderline,
Between death and resurrection and the council of the pines;
Do not worry for my comfort do not sorrow for me so,
For your diamond tears will rise up and adorn the sky beside me, when I go."
[David Carter] from 'When I Go'.

Journey well, sister.

it's a long long road
it's a big big world
we are wise wise women
we are giggling girls
we both carry a smile
to show when we're pleased
we both carry a switchblade
in our sleeves

tell you one thing
i'm gonna make noise when i go down
for ten square blocks
they're gonna know i died
all the goddesses will come up
to the ripped screen door
and say,
what do you want, dear?
and i'll say,
i want inside...

Dear Paula,

miss you..think of you...maybe I'm crazy but it helps to still talk to you...in my own quiet way...your spirit lives on sweetheart. Today there will be many who pause to remember you and your great strength, grace and beauty. Your gifts were many. You touched so many lives in deep and meaningful ways during your short stay on this earth. Blessed are those who knew you. Today I will honor you dear friend.

I think you will like this poem from William Wordsworth:
"Therefore I am still
a lover of the meadows and the woods,
and mountains; and of all that we behold
from this green earth."

Peace and love, Rhonda

Seeing Sisters February 9, 2006 22:59

Paula smiled so huge, the days before Lesley came to visit. Everyday leading up to it, she'd, without prompting, say, "My sister is coming to visit." That was it. Just a simple statement - so full of love and excitement.

Lesley, it said you were everything to her. I think of you often when my sister visits me.

Paula;
I'm not one for showing my emotions, but here goes...
You're in my thoughts every day, and I'm a better person having known you. The thing is, I didn't realize how much of an effect you had on my life until a couple of days ago. I was in my office, after having lunch with the gang at the round table. Your picture was on my monitor when Cydnie came in. I've always wondered what kids remember, and now I know. Cyd took one look and got excited. I had tears of joy, as I remembered how you sat on that fitball, with her on your lap, bouncing around and teaching her Hi-Fives (which she gives to everyone if they ask!). You will always have a special place in my family.

It has been a day filled with wonderful memories of you Paula. So many people are connected through you today...everyone is remembering your big hugs, your "you rock", your determination, your talent, your friendship and your inspiration. You are VERY missed.
I Miss Your High Fives! December 12, 2005 18:54
Heather    Calgary
Paula,

I remember when I heard about what happened. I was too far away that day, living in Australia for a year. I needed one of your high fives that day, and many other days when I thought about you. It's been a year but I still think about you and your crazy high fives all the time. You still inspire me to keep improving. I miss you. Lots of love,

Heather :)

Patagonian Wind December 11, 2005 11:40

Hola Paulita!
Max and I were up at the stupa, a Buddhist monument that a venerable Tibetan lama consecrated here last Sunday (photo attached). I spent the weekend in retreat with him and thought of you often.

Max and I took a moment by the stupa, set high on a mountainside overlooking our beautiful little town and the wide open lake, and sent our thoughts your way. The trees rustled and we felt your presence in the wild Patagonian wind, gently rubbing our shoulders with compassion, and consuelo that you are okay.
I miss you but you continue to inspire.
Christie
